Handicapped Accessible
RIGHT!!
written by Jude

Excited about a day out and spending it
with natures wonders at an indoor Flower
and Garden Show I wonder and worry
about my accessibility to enjoy the
beautiful presentations laid out for all to
                                 see. With concerns of accessibility
pondering around in the back of my mind I
call ahead to speak to a person I am told is
the show coordinator and I find some
comfort being told "Oh Yes. The facility is
totally accessible". Well now I am ready for
my adventurous day to begin and boy am I
Glad I said adventurous because it was at
                                 that.
I now arrive ready to begin my day medical
equipment in tow and wheelchair ready to
roll. Was a gorgeous building from the
outside, lovely ramp onto the walkway and
the doorways were ample wide. I enter the
facility into a beautiful foyer and behold I
can go no further. Looking to my right I see
a staircase going down, glancing to my left
I see staircase going up. I now feel my
                                 adventure beginning and disappointment
                                 setting in once again.
Needless to say it was accessible, I was
instructed to go back outside around the
side of the building to a service entrance
the supplies are brought in and garbage
goes out every time I need to visit different
levels. Oh I forgot to mention this is in
February where 3 inches of slushy snow
has re-frozen to the ground filled with ruts
and frozen foot prints and tire tracks.
If you are handicapped I am sure this story
sounds oh to familiar and as I have you
also have found humor to be the best
medicine. For those of you who fear to be
so adventurous, my advice to you is. Go
enjoy life, take your sense of humor and
do as the Boy Scouts do.. "Always be
prepared". Might not be able to climb that
mountain but be creative you can sneak
                                 around it.
