Weeks after claiming their 3-year-old was rejected for a kidney transplant because she has an intellectual disability, a New Jersey couple said the transplant may go through after all.Chrissy and Joseph Rivera said in an interview with The Philadelphia Inquirer this week that doctors at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia are now considering a transplant for their daughter, Amelia.Earlier this month, Chrissy Rivera wrote in a blog post that a doctor at the Philadelphia hospital told the family that a transplant would not be possible because the girl is “mentally retarded.” Amelia was born with a rare chromosomal disorder called Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome that’s marked by the presence of intellectual disability, developmental delay, seizures and distinct facial characteristics.Rivera’s post went viral and more than 37,000 people have signed an online petition asking the hospital to rethink the decision.

Researchers now say that the cerebral palsy may actually originate in a person’s genes much like other developmental disabilities. The finding, reported online in the journal The Lancet Neurology in January, comes as cerebral palsy rates have remained steady for over 40 years despite marked progress in medical care during and after birth, the researchers note. Scientists already know of six genes that are associated with cerebral palsy when altered, but Moreno De Luca and his colleagues say that more will likely be identified.

Dennis Walcott, chancellor of the city’s Department of Education, said the schools must increase the number of students with disabilities to the level seen at other area high schools. New York City’s most prized public schools are strikingly devoid of students with disabilities. The move comes as enrollment of those with special needs at 11 elite high schools numbered three or fewer students last year. It’s unclear if low enrollment of students with disabilities is because such students aren’t applying or because they are not being admitted.
