Feds Make Case For Accessible Taxis

New York being one of the biggest and largest cities in the United States of America lacks the wheelchair-accessible taxis which is really violating the Americans with Disabilities Act. The U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara says that many people are suffering due to inaccessibility of cabs. The officials of the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission told The New York Times that they will arrange taxis for the disabled with six months.

Crime Odds Nearly Double For People With Disabilities

The US department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics, during the year 2010, shows Americans with disabilities of age 12 and older experience more than 567000 nonfatal violent crimes like robbery, rape and assault. Though the crime against them had decreased 25 percent as compared to the previous year which saw 753000 crimes, the individuals with disabilities continue to be victimized disproportionately. 17 percent of the victims believe that disability was the reason for why they were targeted. People with cognitive disabilities also experience the same problem. Women victims are slightly more than men victims in the list.

Advocates Fear Plan To Curb ‘Teaching To The Test’ May Backfire

Disability advocates plan to reauthorize the nation’s primary education law, is taking heat. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, who chairs the U.S. Senate’s Health, introduced legislation to reauthorize No Child Left Behind. Harkin wants to scrap requirements that schools meet certain achievement standards. The proposed shift in accountability is rankling advocates for people with disabilities and minority students.
